After 12 days of conflict that affected the Middle East, Israel and Iran agreed to a ceasefire plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday. This agreement happened after Iran attacked a U.S. military base in Qatar with missiles as a response. Both countries accepted the deal after Iran launched a final missile attack on Israel, which killed at least five people early Tuesday. Also, before dawn, Israel launched many airstrikes on different places in Iran.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel had agreed to a ceasefire with Iran, with the support of the United States. He told the security cabinet that Israel had achieved its goals in the 12-day operation against Iran. These goals included reducing the threat from Iran's nuclear and missile programs. Netanyahu also said that Israel had damaged Iran's military leaders and government buildings, and gained control of Tehran's skies. He warned that Israel would react strongly if the ceasefire was broken.
Israel launched strong attacks on Iranian cities until almost 4 a.m. After that, Iran fired many missiles, causing Israelis to rush into bomb shelters as the sun rose. Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue services reported that at least five people died and eight were hurt. Iranian missiles killed five people in Israel. Police said that Iran’s missiles damaged at least three apartment buildings in Beersheba. Emergency workers found five bodies in one building and continued searching for others. At least 20 people were injured. The streets were covered with burned cars, broken glass, and rubble. Hundreds of emergency workers gathered to look for more people stuck in the buildings. Police also mentioned that some people were injured even inside their reinforced safe rooms. These rooms are made to protect against rockets but not direct hits from large missiles.
A missile hit a big city in southern Israel just before Trump announced a ceasefire. This happened after Iran attacked a U.S. military base in Qatar with a few missiles, because the U.S. had bombed Iran's nuclear sites. Iran told the U.S. before the attack, so no one was hurt. Trump announced on Truth Social that the ceasefire, starting around midnight in Washington, would officially end the war. He called the conflict the "12 Day War," which reminds people of the 1967 Middle East war, often called the "Six Day War." This name is important to the Arab world, especially Palestinians.
In the 1967 war, Israel took the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, and the Golan Heights from Syria. Israel later gave the Sinai back to Egypt, but it still controls the other areas. A senior White House official, who wanted to stay anonymous, said that Trump talked directly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to get the ceasefire. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff talked to Iranian officials in direct and indirect ways. The White House says that the bombing on Saturday helped convince the Israelis to agree to the ceasefire, and that the Qatari government helped to arrange the deal. It is not clear what part Iran's leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, played in the talks, even though he had said before on social media that he would not give up.
Officials said that Iran's attacks made them close the country's airspace for important flights for several hours. Israeli news reported that some planes had to fly in circles over the Mediterranean Sea. Israel's airports have been closed since the war with Iran started, but a few emergency flights have recently begun to operate. On Tuesday morning, Qatar Airways started its flights again after Qatar closed its airspace because of the Iranian attack on Al Udeid Air Base. Data from flight tracking showed that commercial planes were flying in Qatari airspace again, which suggested that Doha thought the danger to the wealthy nation was over.
Recent fighting in Israel has led to many deaths and injuries, with at least 29 people killed and over 1,000 wounded. Attacks in Iran have also caused at least 974 deaths and 3,458 injuries, according to Human Rights Activists, a group from Washington. This group has given detailed numbers of people hurt or killed in Iran's unrest, including protests after Mahsa Amini's death in 2022. They said that among those killed, 387 were civilians and 268 were security personnel. The U.S. has helped about 250 American citizens and their close family members leave Israel using government, military, and private flights since the weekend. It is thought that around 700,000 American citizens, many of whom are also Israeli citizens, are currently in Israel.
