Groups that help people around the world said Friday that Israel's plans for giving help in Gaza, like a plan from the U.S., will cause more suffering and death. They asked Israel to stop blocking food and other things needed, which has been happening for three months.
The U.S. ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, said a new U.S. plan to give help would start soon. He asked the U.N. and other groups to join. But the U.N. said no. They said the plan uses help as a weapon, could make many Palestinians leave their homes, is not fair, and cannot give enough help.
Every day in Gaza, it is hard for many people to get food. In the city of Khan Younis, thousands of people went to a kitchen run by a charity. They pushed and held up their pots to get some pasta. These kitchens are almost the only way for the 2.3 million people in Gaza to get food. But many have closed recently because there is no more food. This is because of Israel's blockade. Groups that give help say more kitchens will probably close soon.
Raed al-Zaharna and his children had no food because the meals for the day were finished. He said, "Now I am thinking, 'What can I give them to eat?' I cannot find anything."
Since March 2, Israel has stopped food, medicine, and other things from going into Gaza. They say they want Hamas to let go of people they are holding and stop fighting. Israel also broke a ceasefire with Hamas and started bombing Gaza again. They also took control of big parts of the land. Groups that protect human rights say this is a way to make people hungry and maybe a war crime.
Israel said it will give aid again only when it has a new way to give it out. This new way will replace the big effort by the U.N. and other groups. Israel says Hamas and other fighters are taking the aid, but it has not shown proof. The U.N. says this is not happening much and that they watch how the aid is given.
Help for people should not be used to get something you want, a UNICEF spokesperson said. There is another way. Let the help come in, and save lives.
Huckabee said they would tell people more about the new system from the U.S. soon. He said they would start sending things very soon, but he didn't say exactly when.
He said it would be separate from Israel, and Israel would not help give out the aid. He said private companies would keep it safe, and the Israeli army would protect the outside from far away. He also said what Israel said, that this was needed because Hamas was taking the aid.
Huckabee said, 'I know it won't be perfect at the start.'
A new group called the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, or GHF, wants to give help in a way that Israel agrees with. This is based on papers seen by the Associated Press. The group has people who used to work for the government or military, and also people who help others.
In their plan, GHF said they would first open four places to give out things. Private security companies would guard these places. Each place would help 300,000 people. This would cover about half of the people in Gaza. Huckabee said they would make the system bigger as soon as they can.
Aid workers say Palestinians might have to go to places where aid is given out, or walk a long way to get it. This could make many people leave their homes, and big areas of Gaza could become empty. The places for aid are not decided yet, but aid workers say they heard that none will be in northern Gaza, where many Palestinians live.
During the war, Israel often told people in the north of Gaza, including Gaza City, to go away. They said it was safer because soldiers were fighting Hamas there.
Elder said the plan would make it hard for people to stay in their homes because of politics or the army. He also said that the weakest people, like children, old people, and sick people, might not be able to get to the safe places.
Last month, 20 groups helping people in Gaza said the plan would make Palestinians live in bad conditions in small areas near the centers.
Aid workers say Israel has also told the U.N. that it wants to check who gets aid. They worry Israel might stop help for some people because of politics or fighting. But the aid plan says help will go to people who need it.
Elder also said that ordinary people would be in danger if they tried to get help in areas with soldiers.
Elder said that more children could get hurt or die because of this plan.
Aid officials state that the new system will not be sufficient to provide the necessary assistance. Relief organizations have managed numerous distribution points across Gaza, providing essential supplies like food, water, and shelter materials, while also supporting medical facilities, operating shelters, and carrying out other vital programs.
UNRWA, the main UN group helping Palestinian refugees, is leading this work. Last year, Israel stopped the group from working. Israel said some workers were linked to Hamas. UNRWA has over 10,000 workers in Gaza. They said they quickly fire anyone they think is linked to fighters. They also said Israel has not shown them proof for what they said.
Juliette Touma, who works for UNRWA, said they help the most people. She also said it is very hard to give help without UNRWA.
Ruth James from Oxfam said we need big groups of people to help everyone. "That needs time and skill," she said. "A new system that starts so fast without experience and trust from people will not be able to do this."
Huckabee asked UN groups and aid groups to help with the new plan.
A U.N. spokesperson said on Friday that the U.N.'s worries were not heard in many meetings with Israeli officials. He also said that stealing aid was not a big problem.
The main problem is that many trucks with help cannot go into Gaza every day. This is why people there have a difficult time.
