Officials said on Wednesday that Israeli attacks in Gaza killed at least 92 people, including women, children, and two journalists. Israel is getting ready to increase its military actions in the area, as the destructive war is now in its 20th month.
According to health officials, a pair of Israeli airstrikes on Wednesday struck a location in central Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 33 individuals and injuring 86, among them several children, although the actual number of fatalities is expected to be greater.
The Israeli military refrained from offering immediate commentary on the strikes.
On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was not sure if three hostages, who were thought to be alive in Gaza, were still alive. This was after US President Donald Trump said the day before that only 21 out of 24 hostages believed to be alive had survived.
The news plunged the families of the remaining captives in Gaza into a state of panic.
More violence happened on Wednesday, just days after Israel agreed to increase its actions in the Palestinian area. This plan involves taking control of Gaza, keeping the areas they have captured, forcing Palestinians to move to southern Gaza, and managing the distribution of aid with private security companies.
According to health officials, Wednesday's strikes featured a pair of assaults on a densely populated market district in Gaza City.
Videos shared online reportedly showed the scene after the attack, with dead men, including one still sitting in a chair inside a Thai restaurant where local people gathered, and several children lying still on the ground, covered in blood.
According to Gaza's media office, journalist Yahya Sobeih, a freelancer for various local news organisations, was among the fatalities; he had recently posted a picture of his infant daughter on Instagram.
Individuals wounded in the explosions, some suffering grievous injuries, were transported to the adjacent Al-Shifa Hospital, according to Zaher al-Wahidi, a spokesperson for Gaza's health ministry, in a statement to The Associated Press.
The media office reported the death of another local journalist, Nour Abdu, who was killed covering an attack early Wednesday morning at a school being used as a shelter in Gaza City. According to officials at Al-Ahli Hospital, that particular strike resulted in 16 fatalities, while attacks in other areas claimed the lives of at least 16 more individuals.
On Tuesday night, an assault on a school providing shelter for several hundred displaced Palestinians resulted in 27 fatalities, as confirmed by officials from Al-Aqsa Hospital; among the victims were nine women and three children. This particular school has been hit multiple times since the onset of the conflict.
Israel attributes the fatalities to Hamas, asserting that the organisation operates from civilian facilities, such as schools.
Hostilities commenced as militants aligned with Hamas launched assaults on southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 individuals and the abduction of approximately 250 hostages.
Israel has also summoned tens of thousands of reserve soldiers to execute the plan, which it asserts will unfold gradually and will not be put into effect until President Trump concludes his regional visit later this month.
If the fighting gets worse, more people will probably die. Since Israel already controls about half of Gaza, keeping control of more of the area for a long time could lead to a military occupation. This would bring up questions about how Israel plans to rule the area, especially as it thinks about putting Trump’s idea to take over Gaza into action.
The Israeli military campaign in Gaza has reportedly resulted in over 52,000 fatalities, a significant number of whom are women and children, according to Palestinian health authorities who do not differentiate between fighters and non-combatants.
