A serious explosion at a chemical plant in Weifang, a city in eastern China, has caused at least five deaths and injured 19 people, with six still missing. The explosion happened at a plant owned by Gaomi Youdao Chemical Co., which makes pesticides and medical chemicals. The blast broke windows in nearby buildings and sent a lot of smoke into the sky. Students at a nearby school said they smelled something strange after the explosion. More than 230 emergency workers were sent to the scene, and a team was also sent to check for possible pollution. This event happened soon after a national meeting that aimed to make the chemical industry safer, showing that there are still ongoing safety problems in workplaces in China. Last year, the Gaomi Youdao plant was praised for its good risk management, as it had found and fixed over 800 safety problems.
