East Potomac Park in Washington, D.C., has been a low-cost public space for a long time.
Golfers, cyclists, and other people use it.
President Donald Trump now wants to change its golf course into a top-level place.
He has visited the site with officials and architects, and he has shared his plans online.
Some people who live nearby worry that the changes will raise prices and reduce public use.
Joe Foley is a retired lobbyist in his 70s.
He said the plan takes away history and stops people from having a cheap place to play.
He had just finished nine holes for $36, including a cart.
The park was created by a law from Congress in 1897.
Its purpose was for the "recreation and pleasure of the people."
The golf course opened in 1919.
Trump announced his plans in late 2025.
In May, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum showed a picture of an 18-hole course.
He said it would offer "championship-quality golf at affordable rates."
A lawsuit says the redevelopment would break the original law from Congress.
Jason Levitt, 54, is a cyclist.
He said the government seems to follow different rules.
He has used the park for 20 years and rides there about four times a week.
Ryan Bates, 44, has a private club membership.
But he likes East Potomac because of its location.
He said golf should be open to people from all parts of life.
Outgoing Mayor Muriel Bowser said the city could get world-class golf.
Still, she said, it needs to keep public access.
