Labor Day began in the late 1800s as a day to honor workers.
The first U.S. celebration was in New York City on Sept. 5, 1882.
About 10,000 workers marched that day.
President Grover Cleveland signed a law in 1894.
This law made the first Monday of September a legal holiday.
Most big stores and grocery stores will be open on Labor Day.
Many will have sales.
Costco will be closed.
Government offices, post offices, courts, and schools are closed.
U.S. stock markets and banks are closed.
Standard FedEx and UPS pickup and delivery will not run.
Some critical services will still work.
Millions of Americans plan to travel for the last big summer weekend.
AAA says flights to top domestic places are nearly 20% costlier than last year.
Hotel prices have also gone up.
The average U.S. gas price is just under $4.10 a gallon.
That is up 90 cents from a year ago.
Cruises from U.S. ports are about 4% cheaper.
AAA advises travelers to check the weather before driving.
It also says to inspect tires, battery, and fluid levels.
It suggests packing an emergency kit.
That kit should have water, snacks, a flashlight, and jumper cables.
