The Trump administration has started building the border wall in a part of west Texas.
This area is in the Big Bend region.
It is the first big building work in a place where the plans have faced strong opposition.
This is an important step in the administration's $46 billion plan.
The plan is to put walls, barriers, roads and technology along the border.
President Donald Trump promised to finish the wall.
It was a key promise in his campaign.
Customs and Border Protection said workers are putting up border wall panels.
The work is in a 47-mile stretch of Hudspeth County called Big Bend 1.
The agency said the first panels were put up on September 15.
A photo showed a crane lifting one of the steel panels into place.
The panels are 30 feet tall.
This work is separate from a project in nearby Big Bend National Park.
There, construction has been stopped for now.
In the wider Big Bend region, CBP has faced opposition from many people.
These include landowners, environmental groups, business owners and ranchers.
They say the remote region is not a busy area for illegal immigration.
Clara Benson is a founder of the No Big Bend Wall Coalition.
She said the group would keep fighting the plans.
She said the fight is not over.
CBP said it is building about 12 miles of barriers a week.
This is along the 2,000-mile border with Mexico.
The agency said it recently reached 200 miles of new barriers.
This has happened since the second Trump administration took office.
That pace is double what agency head Rodney Scott cited earlier this year.
The agency has also faced opposition from environmental groups.
Other critics include a small town worried about flooding, Native Americans and landowners.
