On Monday, the Supreme Court said the government can quickly send some migrants to other countries. Before, migrants could try to stop this, but now they cannot.
Most of the judges in the main court did not explain their quick decision. One judge, Sonia Sotomayor, and two other judges did not agree with it at all.
Tricia McLaughlin, who works for Homeland Security, said that sending people back to other countries could start again soon. She said, "Get the planes ready to send people back." She also said it was a good decision for the safety of people in America.
But a judge said one plane taking people back to South Sudan would not leave right away.
The people on the May flight were from countries like Myanmar, Vietnam, and Cuba. They had committed serious crimes in the U.S., and officials said they could not send them back to their home countries quickly.
Their lawyer, Trina Realmuto, said they might go to prison, be hurt, or even die if they are sent to South Sudan.
A judge in Boston said that immigrants can still talk about their worries in court. The immigrants are now at a navy base in Djibouti.
This case is happening because the government is trying to send many immigrants away. President Trump wants to send millions of people who live in the U.S. without permission back to their countries.
Abigail Jackson from the White House said the President has the power to make sure immigration laws are followed and to send dangerous people who are not from the US away. She also said the Supreme Court's decision shows that the President can remove criminals who are in the country illegally and "Make America Safe Again."
Sotomayor wrote that the court's decision could put many people in danger of being hurt or dying. She also said it helps the Trump administration, even though they did not follow a previous court order.
She wrote that the government acts like it is above the law. It can send people away to any place without telling them or letting them speak. Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson agreed with her.
South Sudan is a new and poor country. It has had a lot of fighting since it became independent from Sudan in 2011. Now, political problems are getting worse and could cause another civil war.
The Justice Department said in court papers that the government is thinking about the order to decide what to do next.
The highest court stopped Murphy's order. This order let immigrants say that being sent to another country would be dangerous. They could say this even if they had no other legal ways to stop it.
He found that sending people to South Sudan in May was against his orders. He told the immigration office to let people talk to their lawyers about it. The immigration office kept these people in a big container in Djibouti. It was a difficult place for them and the guards.
The government has made agreements with countries like Panama and Costa Rica to keep immigrants. This is because some countries do not want their citizens back after they are sent away from the U.S. Sotomayor wrote that the people sent to South Sudan in May were told less than 16 hours before they had to leave.
Murphy, who was chosen by President Joe Biden, made a decision. This decision did not stop people from being sent to other countries. But he said that people must have a real chance to explain if they are in danger of torture if they are sent to another country.
In another similar situation, the government under President Trump brought back a gay man from Guatemala. He had been sent to Mexico by mistake, and he said he was attacked and robbed there. He was the first person we know of who was allowed back into the U.S. after being deported since President Trump's second term began.
The judges had a similar problem. Trump wanted to send Venezuelans, who were thought to be gang members, to a famous prison in El Salvador. These people would not have a good chance to speak against being sent away in court.
But the judges stopped people from being sent away. They used an old law from the 1700s. This law was for wartime. They said that people who move here must have enough time to go to court before they are sent out of the country.
The court, which has mostly conservative judges, has agreed with Trump on other immigration cases. This allowed his government to stop temporary legal help for almost one million immigrants.
