On Monday, the body of the last person missing from a boat that overturned on Lake Tahoe was found. The boat capsized during a strong storm over the weekend, and now eight people have died.

Coast Guard officials said that a 27-foot Chris-Craft boat with ten people on board overturned near D.L. Bliss State Park on Saturday afternoon. This happened because a sudden storm created large waves on the southwest side of the lake.

Two people were rescued right away and taken to a hospital, but their condition is not known. Six bodies were found later on Saturday, and a seventh body was discovered on Sunday evening, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office. Divers looked for the last body in a part of Lake Tahoe and found it on Monday afternoon.

Sergeant Kyle Parker said that the names of the victims will not be shared until their families are told.

In recent years, there have been some accidental deaths on the lake, including people drowning. However, serious boating accidents with many deaths are not common. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department stated in 2022 that about six people die on the lake every summer, but in 2021, a record fifteen people died. The department could not give updated numbers immediately.

Even weather experts were surprised by how strong the thunderstorm was. Matthew Chyba, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service in Reno, Nevada, said they had expected rain, but not such a strong storm. It hit the south side of the lake around 3 p.m. Winds were over 35 mph (56 kph) and waves became more than 8 feet (2.5 meters) high.

Chyba said they didn't expect it to be so strong.

He said the temperatures in the area were much colder than usual for this time of year, which might have made the air unstable.

Chyba said the eight-foot waves on Lake Tahoe were "quite significant," explaining that they were making the lake very rough.

Lake Tahoe is a well-known spot for summer activities like boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding. This beautiful, but very cold, lake sits on the border between California and Nevada, and it's one of the deepest lakes in the United States, only slightly shallower than Crater Lake in Oregon.

Officials haven't given any information about the group on the boat that sank, or if they rented or owned it.

Saturday's storm dissipated within approximately two hours.

Brittany Glick was on a rented pontoon boat with seven other people, celebrating a friend's bachelorette party on Saturday. The weather suddenly changed, with the wind getting stronger and the waves becoming much bigger. Glick said on Monday that the sunny day suddenly got colder, and it was hard to see.

It felt like a tsunami was just starting. She said she had never experienced anything like it before.

After about an hour of sailing in increasingly rough water, which made the passengers wet, the boat returned to the dock, and then it started to hail.

"Seeing the overturned boats really shocked us," Glick explained. "And being soaked in that water, we were freezing. We were shaking badly, and our feet were numb, with our toes turning blue. It was probably one of the most frightening experiences I've had in my life. The storm arrived so suddenly; it was truly terrifying."

KCRA-TV got a video that showed boats at a nearby marina hitting each other because of strong winds.
