A federal appeals court will probably let former President Donald Trump keep control of California National Guard troops. These troops were sent to Los Angeles because of protests about immigration raids. This decision comes after a lower court told Trump to give control of the Guard back to California's Governor, Gavin Newsom. Governor Newsom did not agree with sending the troops, saying Trump used too much power. What happens in this case could greatly affect how much power a president has to send soldiers into U.S. cities. This situation is important because it's the first time since 1965 that a president has used a state National Guard without the governor's permission. The judges, two chosen by Trump and one by Biden, thought that presidents have a lot of freedom under the federal law being discussed. But, they did not agree with the Justice Department lawyer who said courts could not check Trump's decision. The court's decision is expected soon.
