For the first time, some areas of Alaska will have a heat advisory. This is a new term from the National Weather Service, replacing "special weather statements." The change is meant to better show how serious and dangerous the weather can be, not just to say it's the hottest ever. The first advisory was for Fairbanks, where temperatures were expected to go above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, which is unusual for June. This new term is not about climate change. Instead, it recognizes that hot weather affects Alaska, especially in places without air conditioning. Right now, this advisory system is only used in Juneau and Fairbanks, but there are plans to use it in Anchorage too. However, even with the warm weather, temperatures in Anchorage have not yet reached the level for a heat advisory.
