On Monday, the body of the last person missing from a boat that overturned on Lake Tahoe was found. The boat capsized during a strong storm over the weekend, and now eight people have died.
Ten people were on a 27-foot (8-meter) Chris-Craft boat when it overturned on Saturday afternoon. This happened near D.L. Bliss State Park on the southwest side of Lake Tahoe, as a storm caused large waves.
The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office said that two people were quickly rescued and taken to a hospital, but their condition is not known. Six bodies were found on Saturday, and a seventh body was found on Sunday evening. Divers looked in part of Lake Tahoe and found the last body on Monday afternoon.
Sergeant Kyle Parker said that the names of the victims will not be shared until their families are told.
Sadly, people have died in accidents on the lake recently, including some who drowned. However, serious boating accidents with many deaths are not common. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department told KCRA-TV in 2022 that about six people die on the lake every summer, but in 2021, a record 15 people died. The department could not give updated numbers immediately.
Even weather experts were surprised by how strong the thunderstorm became. Meteorologist Matthew Chyba from the National Weather Service in Reno, Nevada, said they expected some rain, but not the intense storm that hit the southern part of the lake around 3 p.m. The storm brought winds over 35 mph (56 kph) and waves that grew to more than 8 feet (2.5 meters).
Chyba said they didn't expect it to be so strong.
He said the temperatures in the area were much colder than usual for this time of year, which might have made the air unstable.
Chyba said that eight-foot waves on Lake Tahoe were "pretty significant" and that "they were really making the lake shake."
Lake Tahoe is a well-known place for summer activities like boating and kayaking. This beautiful, but very cold, lake sits on the border between California and Nevada, and it's one of the deepest lakes in the United States, only slightly less deep than Crater Lake in Oregon.
Officials haven't given any information about the people on the boat that sank. They also haven't said if the boat was rented or owned.
The storm that occurred on Saturday dissipated within approximately two hours.
Brittany Glick was on a rented pontoon boat with seven other people, celebrating a friend's bachelorette party on Saturday. The weather suddenly changed: the wind got stronger and the waves became much bigger. Glick said on Monday that the day had started sunny, but then the temperature quickly dropped, and it was hard to see.
It felt like a tsunami was just starting. I had never experienced anything like that, she said.
After an hour battling rougher and rougher waves, which left everyone wet, the boat returned to the dock just as it started to hail.
"Seeing the overturned boats really shocked us," Glick explained. "Being soaked through was awful, we were shivering uncontrollably from the cold. Our feet were numb, and our toes were turning blue. It was probably one of the most frightening experiences I've had in my life. The storm appeared so suddenly; it was truly terrifying."
KCRA-TV got a video that showed boats at a nearby marina hitting each other because of strong winds.
