For the first time, some parts of Alaska are now under a heat advisory. This is a new term the National Weather Service is using instead of "special weather statements." The change helps people understand how serious and dangerous the weather can be, not just that it's unusually hot. The first advisory was for Fairbanks, where temperatures were expected to go above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, which is unusual for June. This new term doesn't mean it's because of climate change, but it shows that hot weather does affect Alaska, especially where there's no air conditioning. Right now, this advisory system is only used in Juneau and Fairbanks, but they plan to use it in Anchorage later. Even though it's been warm, Anchorage hasn't reached the temperature needed for a heat advisory yet.
