On Monday, the body of the last person missing from a boat that overturned on Lake Tahoe in California was found. The boat capsized during a sudden and strong thunderstorm over the weekend. This means that eight people have now died.

A 27-foot Chris-Craft boat with ten people on board overturned on Saturday afternoon. This happened near D.L. Bliss State Park, which is on the southwest side of the lake. A sudden storm caused big waves, making the boat flip over.

Two people were rescued right away and taken to a hospital, but their condition is not known. The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office said that six bodies were found on Saturday, and a seventh body was found on Sunday evening. Divers looked in a part of Lake Tahoe and found the last body on Monday afternoon.

Sergeant Kyle Parker stated that the victims' names will not be public until their families have been informed.

In recent years, people have died in the lake from accidents like drowning, but serious boating accidents with many deaths don't happen often. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department said in 2022 that about six people die in the lake each summer. However, in 2021, a record 15 people died. The department could not give new numbers right away.

Even weather experts were surprised by how strong the thunderstorm became. Meteorologist Matthew Chyba from the National Weather Service in Reno, Nevada, said they had expected some rain, but not the intense storm that hit the southern part of the lake around 3 p.m. The storm brought winds over 35 mph (56 kph) and waves that grew to more than 8 feet (2.5 meters).

Chyba said they didn't expect it to be so strong.

He said the temperatures in the area were much colder than usual for this time of year, which might have made the air unstable.

Chyba said the eight-foot waves on Lake Tahoe were "quite big," and they were "really making the lake move a lot."

Lake Tahoe is a well-known spot for summer activities like boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding. This beautiful, but very cold, lake sits on the border of California and Nevada and is one of the deepest in the United States, only surpassed by Oregon's Crater Lake.

Officials haven't given any information about the people on the boat that sank, or if they rented or owned it.

Saturday's storm dissipated within approximately two hours.

Brittany Glick was on a rented pontoon boat with seven other people, celebrating a friend's bachelorette party on Saturday, when the weather suddenly changed. The wind got stronger and the waves became much bigger. Glick said on Monday that the day had started sunny, but then the temperature quickly dropped, and it was hard to see.

She said it felt like a tsunami was just starting, and she had never experienced anything like it before.

After an hour battling rougher and rougher waves, which left everyone wet, the boat returned to the dock, just as it started to hail.

Seeing the boats turned over really shocked us, Glick said. And because we were completely wet, we were very cold and couldn't stop shaking. Our feet felt numb, and our toes were turning blue. That was probably one of the most frightening moments I've had in my life. The storm came very quickly; it was truly terrifying.

KCRA-TV got a video that showed boats at a nearby marina hitting each other because of strong winds.
