For the first time, some parts of Alaska will have a heat advisory. This is a new term the National Weather Service is using instead of "special weather statements." The change is meant to better explain how serious and dangerous the weather is, not just to say that temperatures are higher than ever before. The first advisory was for Fairbanks, where temperatures were expected to go above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, which is unusual for June. This new term is not about climate change. Instead, it shows that hot weather does affect Alaska, especially in areas without air conditioning. Right now, only Juneau and Fairbanks can use this advisory system, but there are plans to use it in Anchorage too. Even though it has been hot in Anchorage, the temperatures have not yet reached the level needed for a heat advisory.
