Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a builder from Maryland, said he is not guilty of bringing people illegally into the country. His lawyers said the charges are just an excuse because he was sent back to El Salvador by mistake in March. This happened after the highest court said he had to come back. Abrego Garcia's lawyers said that the people who spoke for the government were not telling the truth. They said these people helped the government to get special immigration help. The charges started after police stopped his car in Tennessee in 2022. He had nine people in the car, and the police thought he was bringing them illegally. But they let him go with only a warning. Before the court case, the government said Abrego Garcia was dangerous and might try to escape. They said he was selling drugs and guns, and hurting the women he was driving. Because of these charges, Ben Schrader, who was in charge of criminal cases for the government, left his job.
