Un juge fédéral du Massachusetts a bloqué la tentative du président Donald Trump de remettre en question les résultats des élections américaines, en donnant raison à un groupe de procureurs généraux d'États démocrates qui affirmaient que cette action était contraire à la Constitution.

L'ordre exécutif de Trump, publié en mars, visait à imposer la preuve de citoyenneté pour s'inscrire sur les listes électorales. Il cherchait également à n'accepter que les bulletins de vote postaux reçus avant le jour de l'élection et à conditionner le financement fédéral des élections au respect par les États de ce nouveau délai.

La Maison-Blanche a défendu cette directive, affirmant qu'elle garantirait des élections "libres, équitables et honnêtes". Cependant, la juge Denise J. Casper a estimé que les États avaient de bonnes chances de gagner leurs contestations juridiques, car la Constitution ne donne pas au Président de pouvoirs spécifiques sur les élections.

En outre, la décision a mis en suspens une partie de l'ordonnance qui demandait aux États de refuser les bulletins de vote par correspondance ou par procuration arrivés après le jour de l'élection.

C'est la deuxième fois que le mandat électoral de Trump subit un revers juridique, après qu'un juge de Washington D.C. a déjà bloqué certaines parties de la directive.
