The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has temporarily stopped a federal judge's order for President Trump to give back control of National Guard troops to California. This happened after the troops were sent to deal with protests about immigration raids in Los Angeles. Before this, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer had decided that sending the troops was against the law because it went against the Tenth Amendment and was more than Trump's legal power allowed. California Governor Gavin Newsom had praised the first decision. However, the White House criticized Breyer's order, calling it "unprecedented" and an "abuse of power." The decision only applied to the National Guard, not to Marines who were also being sent out. Newsom had sued to stop the Guard from being sent, saying it would make tensions worse and cause public disorder. The troops were sent under Title 10, which allows the president to call the National Guard for federal duty under certain rules.
