For the first time, parts of Alaska, including Fairbanks, are under a heat advisory, a new term from the National Weather Service that replaces "special weather statements." This change aims to better explain how serious and dangerous the weather is, rather than just saying temperatures are unusually high. The first advisory was for Fairbanks, where temperatures were expected to go above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, which is unusual for June. This new term doesn't mean it's about climate change, but it recognizes that hot weather does affect Alaska, especially in places without air conditioning. Currently, this advisory system is only allowed in Juneau and Fairbanks, but there are plans to use it in Anchorage too. However, Anchorage's temperatures haven't yet reached the level needed for a heat advisory.
