Donald Trump said he will make taxes on steel from other countries bigger, to help steel workers in Pennsylvania.

Later, he wrote that aluminum will also be 50% more expensive. He said the new prices will start on Wednesday.

Trump talked at a steel factory near Pittsburgh. He said a company from Japan will give money to the American steel company. We will know more later.

Trump came back to Washington. He said he must agree to the deal.

He said, "I need to say yes to the last paper from Nippon. We haven't seen it. But they will give us a lot of money. It is a big plan.

Trump first said Japan could not buy U.S. Steel. But then he changed his mind. Last week, he said Japan can own part of it.

We don't know if the deal is finished. His team helped with it. We also don't know who will own it. Nippon Steel wants to buy U.S. Steel. They said they will put more money into U.S. Steel factories. They also promised not to fire workers or close factories. They want the government to say yes to the purchase.

Today, we are here for a big agreement. This agreement will help this old American company stay American, Trump said. "You will stay an American company, right?"

Trump talked about taxes on steel from other countries. He said if he makes these taxes bigger, steel companies in the U.S. will be safer. But this could also make steel cost more.

Steel costs 16% more now. This started in January when Trump became president. The government said this.

In March 2025, steel cost $984 for one ton in the U.S. This was more expensive than in Europe ($690) or China ($392). The U.S. made much more steel than it bought from other countries last year. Canada, Brazil, Mexico, and South Korea sold the most steel to the U.S.

Taxes on steel from other countries helped steel companies in the U.S. Nippon Steel wanted to buy U.S. Steel because of this.

The steel workers were still not sure.

David McCall is the boss. He said his group is worried. He thinks if U.S. Steel joins a company from another country, it will be bad for the country, the workers, and the towns.

Trump said the deal will keep the company in America. This company is important for making cars and for the country's safety.

Trump wants to make new deals and bring money to the U.S. He also wants to make his voters happy, especially workers who want him to help U.S. factories.

U.S. Steel did not tell people about the new plan. Nippon Steel said they like the plan, but they did not tell the details.

Some people know about a plan. A company from Japan, Nippon, will buy U.S. Steel. Nippon will spend money on U.S. Steel factories in some states. Most of the people in charge of the company will be from America. The U.S. government can stop some decisions.

Some steelworkers have different ideas about Nippon Steel buying the company. At first, they did not like it. But now, they think it is okay because U.S. Steel might close their factories near Pittsburgh.

Clifford Hammonds works at the plant. Trump spoke there. Clifford said the deal will help the old plant get better. It will also help them make more things.

"We are using money to fix the factory. It is old and broken. We don't make enough things here. We need to fix the machines."

This is very important for Trump. Last year, he said no to this deal. He also said no to foreign people owning U.S. Steel. Biden said no too.

Trump said he would help American factories. U.S. Steel is a big company. If it does not do well, it could be bad for his party in some states in the next election. These states have many factories.

Trump said no to the deal if U.S. Steel is not American. He wants its main office to stay in Pittsburgh.

The president spoke on Friday and said thank you to the steel workers.

He said, "We will make our own metal and energy. We will build our country. We will make our own future. We will use Pennsylvania steel to make America strong again.

Trump and other U.S. leaders talked about Nippon Steel. This company will put a lot of money, $14 billion, in the U.S. They will also build a new steel factory there.

On Friday, some workers from U.S. Steel were with him on stage. Jason Zugai was one of them. He is a boss at the Irvin factory. His group said yes to Nippon Steel buying U.S. Steel.

Zugai's father lost his job. Zugai talked to important people. He wanted them to help the steel company. He thought the company would close its factories near Pittsburgh.

Zugai told Trump, "I knew you would help us." He said Nippon Steel wants to put a lot of money, $14 billion, into making steel in America. He thinks this will make life much better.
