On Friday, New Jersey trains stopped because the drivers did not work. About 350,000 people could not take the train to New Jersey or New York City, so they had to find another way to travel or stay home.
The workers stopped working because they didn't agree after talking on Thursday. This is the first time in 40 years they have stopped working like this. It happened one month after the workers said "no" to a work deal.
"We gave them our idea, but they said no and left," said Tom Haas. "There were still two hours to go."
The NJ Transit boss, Kris Kolluri, said they are stopping the talks for now.
He said, "I want to talk again soon about this. If they want to meet tonight, I will meet them. If they want to meet tomorrow, I will meet them. I think we can find a way to fix this problem. But do they want to find a fix?"
Murphy said it's important to make a deal. The deal should be good for workers. It should also be easy for people in New Jersey to pay for.
The news said the talks took 15 hours. The workers may start to not work at 4 a.m. on Friday.
NJ Transit has trains and buses in New Jersey. Many people use them to go to New York City. Now, the trains are not running. This stops people from going between New Jersey and New York City by train. The Newark airport also has some problems.
The bus company said they have plans to help. They will add more buses, but only near train stations in New York. The buses will start on Monday. They will also use other bus companies to help from some parking areas on weekdays.
But the company said the buses can't carry as many people. Only a few people who use the train now can use the bus. So, if there is a strike, the company asks people to work from home if they can.
The idea of it stopped some travel. The bus and train company stopped rides to Shakira's shows on Thursday and Friday in New Jersey.
They met on Monday in Washington to talk. Someone helped them talk on Thursday. They will meet again on Sunday morning to talk more.
The agency and the train workers are talking about money. The workers want to get paid like other train workers. They want about $170,000 each year. Now, they get about $113,000. They hope the boss, Kris Kolluri, says yes.
But NJ Transit says the union is wrong. They say engineers earn $135,000 each year, and some earn more than $200,000.
Two people, Kolluri and Murphy, said on Thursday that it's not just about agreeing to pay workers more. The real problem is if giving more money to these workers will make other groups of workers want more money too. This could make things too expensive for NJ Transit.
The government can stop the strike and make the workers agree to a deal. But this time, they don't want to do that, like they did in 2022 for the train strike.
The union at NJ Transit has fewer members now. Many workers have left for better jobs at other train companies. There were 500 engineers, but now there are only 450.
