Mary Lou Retton, the famous American gymnast, was arrested in her hometown of West Virginia for driving under the influence, a minor offense. The arrest happened on May 17th after police received reports of a Porsche being driven unsafely. When officers stopped Retton, they noticed she smelled of alcohol, her speech was unclear, and there was a wine bottle in the passenger seat. Retton, who is 57, failed a sobriety test and refused both a breath test and a blood test. She was later released after paying a $1,500 bond. Her lawyer, Edmund J. Rollo, has not yet commented on the situation. This incident comes after it was revealed in 2023 that Retton was recovering from a rare and serious type of pneumonia that required her to be in intensive care because her oxygen levels were dangerously low.
