Donald Trump wanted a new doctor for health problems. This doctor wrote a book saying that some unproven drugs that make people see things should be tried as medicine. He also said in a letter that using mushrooms helped him find someone to love.
It's important to know that Dr. Casey Means suggested trying psilocybin therapy. This is because psilocybin is illegal under federal law. It's a Schedule 1 drug, meaning it has no accepted medical use and can be easily misused. While psychedelic therapy is legal in Oregon and Colorado, some cities in Oregon have banned it again.
The job of the Surgeon General is to give the best scientific information to Americans so they can be healthier and avoid getting sick or hurt. In the past, Surgeon Generals have used their position to teach people about health issues like AIDS and stopping suicide. One former Surgeon General warned people about the dangers of smoking in 1964, and this helped to change the health of America.
Some people, like Dr. C. Everett Koop who advised President Ronald Reagan on health, have a big impact and are well-known. Others are easily forgotten.
President Trump chose Dr. Means, which is like how he often picks people known for their image, not just their politics. He said he didn't know Dr. Means but chose her because Robert F. Kennedy Jr. thought she was great, saying, "Bobby thought she was wonderful."
Dr. Means studied at Stanford University and got a degree in medicine. She started training as a doctor in Oregon, but she didn't finish it. Now, she is not allowed to work as a doctor. When we called her, she didn't want to talk about it.
In her book "Good Energy," published in 2024, she talked about psychedelic drugs. She wrote the book with her brother, Curry Means, who works as a health advisor for the Trump government. Curry said he invested in a drug company that studies psychedelic drugs.
Many books are about metabolic health, which Dr. Means calls "good energy." She suggests ways to deal with stress and bad thoughts that hurt our health, and to feel better.
One idea is to think about using therapy with psilocybin, a part of magic mushrooms. She wrote a long article of 750 words about this idea.
彼女は、「もし何かを感じたら、シロシビンを使った特別な治療を試してみてください。科学的な研究で、この治療は、私にとってそうだったように、人生でとても大切な経験になる人もいると分かっています」と書きました。
Some studies suggest psychedelics might be helpful, but it's not clear if the good things are more important than the risks. Psilocybin can cause hallucinations for hours, which can be good or scary. It's being studied with therapy to treat mental illness and alcohol problems, but there's little research on healthy people. Side effects include a faster heartbeat, feeling sick, and headaches. Taking it without supervision is dangerous, as hallucinations could cause users to walk into traffic or take other risks.
Dr. Means calls psychedelics "plant medicine" in her book. She writes that she first took mushrooms around January 1, 2021. She says a voice inside her told her, "It's time to get ready," and that's why she did it.
彼女は、「私は、昔からいるたくさんの母と赤ちゃんという、終わらない人形の一部みたいに感じました」と書きました。そして、「シロシビンは、私を小さな考えから解放して、違う世界へのドアになる」とも言いました。
In the October newsletter, Dr. Means said she used psychedelics at 35 to help her find love. She said she tried plant medicine with a trusted guide and then felt ready for a relationship. She ended the message with a mushroom emoji. She also said she doesn't want to tell other people to do the same thing.
This month, Dr. Means wrote about health ideas for the White House. She wants schools to give healthier food. She also wants warning labels on very processed food, studies about vaccine safety, and no conflicts of interest. She didn't talk about psychedelics, but said researchers don't study "normal, natural, and unpatented medicines" because it's not profitable. She thinks some research money should go to other health ideas.
Curry Means also likes using psychedelic drugs. In a blog post from 2021, he said that trying psilocybin for the first time during a hard time was "the most important experience in my life, for me as a person, at work, and spiritually." In 2022, he said he "sold all of his retirement money and bought stock in two companies that develop and study psychedelics." He didn't answer when people asked him for a comment.
We don't know when Dr. Kaycee Meanes will have her interview to check if she is suitable for the job. President Trump chose Dr. Meanes after he stopped Janet Nesheiwat from getting the job because people had questions about her past. Nesheiwat used to write about health for Fox News.
