On Thursday, the Supreme Court talked about President Trump's plan to limit citizenship for people born in the US. They seemed to want to find a way to make the court order about this plan smaller, but they also want to keep blocking the plan for now.
We don't know what the decision will be. But most judges worry about what will happen if the government doesn't give citizenship to children of people living in the country illegally, even for a short time.
The judges listened to arguments about Trump's government quickly asking for a review of a lower court's order. That order was stopping limits on people's rights across the country.
A judge stopped President Trump's new plan for the government. This makes Trump and his supporters unhappy.
Attorney General D. John Sauer told the court that since January, when President Trump started his second term, 40 orders to stop things across the country have been made. He said this at the beginning of a court argument that lasted over two hours.
When someone is born in a country, they automatically become a citizen. This is a problem related to immigration. The government wants the courts to deal with it quickly.
That kind of lawsuit is started quickly and finished quickly, and sometimes it can be used in the whole country.
But when Judge Amy Coney Barrett and others asked questions, Sauer said the Trump government might not like the lawsuits or might try to make them take longer.
Arguments about urgent appeals at the Supreme Court don't happen often. Usually, the judges talk about the main important parts of the problem.
But now, the government isn't asking the court to decide about a bigger problem. If the court agrees with the government about stopping something across the whole country, we don't know how long the different rules about citizenship for children born in America will last.
We think they will decide by the end of June.
