On Thursday, the Supreme Court appeared likely to uphold the block on President Trump's restrictions regarding citizenship, while also seeking methods to limit the scope of nationwide court orders.
The exact details of the decision were unclear, but most of the court worried about the possible effects if the Trump administration could, even for a short time, stop children born to undocumented people in the US from becoming citizens.
The judges listened to arguments in the Trump administration's urgent appeals about lower court rulings. These rulings have stopped the government from putting citizenship limits into place nationwide.
Nationwide injunctions have become a key way to control Trump's attempts to change the government, but they are also making the Republican president and his supporters increasingly annoyed.
Since January, when Trump started his second term, judges have made 40 nationwide rulings, lawyer D. John Sauer told the court as arguments began.
The administration has urgently asked the court to consider birthright citizenship, along with other immigration-related matters.
This type of legal action could be processed rapidly and might have national implications.
However, when questioned by Justice Amy Coney Barrett and other judges, Sauer suggested the Trump administration might disagree with this kind of lawsuit or perhaps attempt to delay group legal actions.
It's unusual for the Supreme Court to hear arguments about urgent appeals, as they typically focus on the main issues of a case.
The government didn't request the court to address the broader question at this time, and if the court agrees with the government regarding nationwide injunctions, it remains uncertain how long these differing rules about citizenship would affect children born in the US.
They should make a decision by the end of June.
