Pope Leo XIV spoke at the Vatican on Friday.
He met with AI researchers and experts.
He said the most urgent problem is ethics.
The world needs groups to put AI ethics into practice.
The pope is American.
He has made AI a key priority.
He said people already know the principles.
But he said the world lacks groups.
These groups must protect the common good for everyone.
Leo asked for shared standards.
He asked for independent oversight.
He asked for clear accountability.
These would let people check AI decisions.
People could challenge them when needed.
They would also bring help for any harm.
The Pontifical Academy of Life helped run the meeting.
It is the Vatican's bioethics group.
The Future of Life Institute also helped.
Leo wrote a letter on AI in 2026.
It is called "Magnificent Humanity."
It asked for strong rules on AI.
It asked developers to work for the common good.
It said they should not work only for profit.
On Friday, he repeated many key points.
He said the future of AI is not fixed.
It depends on choices made today.
Developers and political leaders make these choices.
He also said machines are tools.
They are not persons.
They should not get legal status.
They should not make life-or-death decisions.
But he said one problem is the most urgent.
It is the ethical framework for institutions.
