US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an "energy ceasefire" in the war, which has now lasted four and a half years, but he did not disclose any specific details; Kyiv, however, said that Moscow had continued to attack energy facilities after his announcement.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that although Ukraine "welcomed" Trump's statement and considered it "good news for everyone," Russia was still continuing its strikes on the energy infrastructure in Kyiv and Kharkiv.
"Unfortunately, throughout the entire day today, Ukraine's skies have been filled with Russia's 'Shaheds,'" he said in his evening address, referring to the drones launched by Moscow.
"There have also been glide bomb attacks, as well as strikes on our energy infrastructure.
Tonight a power plant in Kharkiv came under attack."
Throughout this war, Russia has consistently sought to cut off electricity, heating, and running water supplies to Ukrainian civilians, hoping thereby to erode the public's will to resist Moscow's full-scale invasion.
Ukrainian officials have described this strategy as "weaponizing winter."
Zelensky stated that Ukraine has proposed numerous de-escalation steps, but Russian President Vladimir Putin "has only one answer to all proposals — 'no'. We sincerely hope that he will eventually say something different to the United States, Ukraine, and the entire world."

In a post on X, he said he had consulted with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte about this development.
In an interview broadcast earlier on Sunday, Zelensky said that if Moscow halted its attacks on Ukraine's energy system, Kyiv would be prepared to stop striking Russian oil refineries, and he called on Trump to pressure the Kremlin into agreeing.
On September 14, Trump claimed on social media that the two countries had agreed not to strike each other's energy infrastructure, but he likewise provided no details about the proposal.

"Give us two months — that is, a 60-day truce.
A comprehensive ceasefire lasting 60 days, at which point we will proceed to organise elections," he said, adding that Ukraine would be prepared to accept whatever choice the people make.
"With all due respect, President Trump, choosing which leader we have is the right of our society and our people," he said.
Zelenskyy also added that holding elections during wartime would be illegal, and that Ukraine would need security guarantees in order to allow safe voting.
Since Putin launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has been under martial law, and the Ukrainian constitution prohibits holding elections during martial law.
Beyond the legal obstacles, a nationwide vote would be vulnerable to Russian attacks, and organizing elections is widely regarded as logistically impossible, given that about one-fifth of the country's territory is occupied by Russia, millions of Ukrainians have been displaced abroad, and soldiers remain on the front lines.
Zelensky's term officially expired in May 2024, but the constitution permits him to remain in office until a new president is sworn in.

He sought to pin the blame for record diesel prices in the United States on Ukraine, rather than on the US-led war against Iran — which had driven up global energy prices.
