Google has renamed Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its Maps app for users in the United States.

The change follows an order by President Donald Trump.

Google confirmed the update in a blog post on Saturday.

The move comes days after Trump’s order, during an escalating trade war with Canada.

Both countries have imposed billions of dollars in new tariffs on each other’s goods.

Google made a similar change in 2025 when it renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

Google said it follows its policy of using names from the U.S. Geographic Names Information System.

Users in the U.S. will see “Lake America.”

Users in Canada will still see “Lake Ontario.”

Users outside both countries will see both names.

Trump’s decision drew mockery and indifference in both nations.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded with a billboard on the Canadian shore reading: “Lake Ontario. Now and forever.”

The White House, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office, and Ford’s office did not comment on Google’s decision.
