He warned that the United States could lose its edge over China.

Trump said winning the AI race would help address the risks of the technology.

Trump said some regulation may be needed, but he gave no details.

He blamed warnings about fast AI growth on unnamed “negative forces.”

He said AI will be “more good than bad, but by a lot.”

He denied that he was downplaying the risks.

Trump spoke a day after Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, called for a pause in AI development.

He said the pause would let safety measures catch up.

Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman agreed with Amodei.

Trump said the U.S. leads China in AI and he wants to keep it that way.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to meet Trump at the White House later in September.

AI may come up at that meeting.

AI is now a major election-year issue in the U.S.
