U.S. President Donald Trump has asked Apple to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its maps app, his administration's interior chief said on Monday, just days after signing an executive order over the body of water, which has come under scrutiny amid his escalating trade war with Canada.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum told Fox’s “Mornings with Maria” program that Trump “reached out to Apple directly.”

He expressed confidence that the “Lake America” name could soon be visible on its platform.

Apple offered no immediate response, and as of Monday afternoon, only the designation Lake Ontario had appeared on its platform.

Over the weekend, Google Maps introduced the new name "Lake America" for U.S. users viewing the body of water between New York State and Ontario, Canada.

The company linked this change to a recent executive order by Trump and its established practice of using names from the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).

Google stated in a brief announcement on Saturday that users of Maps in the United States will see 'Lake America,' those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario,' and those outside both countries will see both names.

The company reiterated that such updates follow its long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary by country.

Trump proclaimed the new designation “Lake America” last week — one of the latest provocations in his escalating trade war with Canada, which is now driving up tariffs on both sides of the border.

His executive order on Friday instructed the Interior Department to revise the lake’s name within the U.S. geographic naming system.

The president cannot force Canada to comply, however.

And America's northern neighbors quickly rejected the idea.

The leader of the Seneca Nation in upstate New York also said the move violates a treaty that is more than 225 years old and shows a "blatant disrespect" for the Indigenous people who originally gave Lake Ontario its name.

This is not the first occasion on which Trump has sought to rename bodies of water extending beyond U.S. jurisdiction.

In the previous year, Trump issued an order designating the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America — a change subsequently reflected in the U.S. maps of both Apple and Google.
