President Donald Trump said this week that he would welcome data centers in any town or state.

He cited the jobs and tax revenue they bring.

He made the comment at the White House alongside cryptocurrency leaders.

But his message is not one that candidates in competitive midterm races are using.

Voter anger over data centers has become a major political issue.

The centers can be larger than football stadiums and use more energy than small cities.

Residents worry about higher electricity bills, water use, pollution, and changes to community character.

The Senate Republicans’ campaign arm warned that data center anger could cost them a seat.

In Ohio, Democratic nominee Sherrod Brown is running attack ads against Republican Sen. Jon Husted.

Brown calls Husted the “face of data centers.”

A Republican memo said data centers are “the anchor hanging around Husted’s neck.”

Most registered voters oppose building a data center in their area, according to a July Fox News poll.

In Nevada, Democrat Aaron Ford tied Trump’s statement to Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo.

Ford said he would halt new state tax breaks for data centers.

In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott faces attacks from his Democratic challenger over data center development.

Abbott has promised tougher action, but Trump criticized the shift.

Trump said, “I think it’s a mistake.”

Even some of Trump’s allies are using data centers for attacks.

U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, running for Wisconsin governor, released an ad branding his Democratic opponent as “Data Center David Crowley.”

Crowley said Tiffany is lying because Tiffany has supported data center legislation in Congress.
