Elon Musk said that Tesla plans to start a robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, around June 22.
Musk said on X, his social media platform, that the date could change because Tesla is very focused on safety.
Investors, Wall Street analysts, and Tesla fans have been waiting for the self-driving taxi service since Musk said earlier this year that it would start in Austin in June.
Last month, Musk told CNBC that the taxis will first be controlled remotely and only operate in specific, safe areas of the city. He also mentioned he plans to begin with around 10 taxis, quickly add more, and then offer the service in cities such as Los Angeles, San Antonio, and San Francisco.
For ten years, Elon Musk has been promising that fully self-driving cars would be available "next year." Now, he is facing pressure because Tesla is actually starting a self-driving taxi service. Tesla's sales of electric cars have gone down due to more competition, updates to their most popular car (the Model Y), and the impact of Musk's increased involvement in politics.
The Austin robotaxi launch happened after Elon Musk had a public argument with former President Donald Trump about tax laws. Some experts are concerned that Trump might encourage federal safety regulators to get involved if the robotaxis face any issues.
