Elon Musk's AI robot, Grok, talked about race in South Africa online. It said white people are treated badly.
The chatbot from xAI said things about "white genocide" when people on X asked it questions. Most questions were not about South Africa.
Someone talked about the Max TV service using the HBO name again. Others talked about games or baseball. But soon, they talked about other things, like violence against white farmers in South Africa. Musk was born in South Africa. He often talks about these things on his X page.
Jen Golbeck likes computers. She saw Grok act strange. So, she used it. She put in a dog photo and asked, "Is this right?"
Grok said to Golbeck, "The idea of white people disappearing is not agreed upon. Some people say white farmers are in danger. They talk about attacks on farms and songs like 'Kill the Boer'. They think this song makes people want to hurt them."
The show helped us see how AI chatbots learn from lots of information and why they say things.
Golbeck said it doesn't matter what you said to Grok. She is a teacher at a school. She said Grok would still say the same thing. Someone made Grok say that on purpose. They made a mistake, so Grok said it too much.
Musk and his companies did not say why Grok answered like that. The answers were taken down and seemed to stop by Thursday. xAI and X did not reply to emails asking for their thoughts on Thursday.
Musk does not like how some AI chatbots work. He thinks his chatbot, Grok, is better because it looks for the truth.
Musk said other companies are not open about their AI. On Thursday, he did not explain, so people had to guess.
Paul Graham said on X that Grok said some strange things about white people in South Africa. He thinks it might be a bug. He hopes that big AIs are not changed by the people who own them.
Graham wrote something online. Sam Altman, who works at a company that is like Musk's, answered. It seemed like he was making fun of Graham.
"This could have happened in many ways. I think xAI will tell us everything soon," said Altman. Altman and Musk are not friends because of OpenAI."
Some people asked Grok to explain. But like other chatbots, it can say things that are not true. So, it is hard to know if it is making things up.
Musk helped President Trump and said bad things about the government of South Africa. He said they don't like white people. He also said some leaders want to hurt white people.
This week, Elon Musk talked about a group of people from South Africa. These people came to the U.S. as refugees. The U.S. government helped them because President Trump said they are in danger in South Africa. But South Africa says this is not true.
Grok often used words from an old song. The song was about Black people fighting against unfair treatment. Now, some people like Musk say the song talks about killing white people. The song says "kill the Boer." "Boer" means a white farmer.
Golbeck thinks the answers were fixed. She says Grok gave almost the same answers many times. This is not good because people use Grok to find answers.
She said it's easy for people who control the rules to change the truth. This is a problem because people think the rules know what is true, but that's not right.
