A man who used to deliver food said he did something wrong. He worked with others to take money from DoorDash. They took over $2 million by making DoorDash pay for food that was never delivered, police said.
Sayee Chaitanya Reddy Devagiri said he was guilty of wire fraud in court, officials said.
Devagiri, 30, from Newport Beach, California, said he worked with three people to trick a delivery company in San Francisco in 2020 and 2021, police said.
The police said Devagiri used people's accounts to order things. Then, he used a worker's password to get into DoorDash's system. He changed the orders to go to driver accounts that he and his friends had. These accounts said they delivered the orders, but they did not. Devagiri made DoorDash pay these accounts for deliveries that never happened.
Devagiri used the DoorDash app. He changed orders to say "not done" and gave them to other drivers he knew, the police said.
The worker said they were sorry for the plan to trick people. This happened in 2023.
Devagiri helped with a plan. He is the third person found guilty. He may go to jail for 20 years. He may also pay money. He will be back in court on Sept. 16.
