A man who used to deliver food said he was guilty. He worked with others to steal money from DoorDash. They made the company pay for food that was never delivered. They stole more than $2.5 million, police said.
Sayee Chaitanya Reddy Devagiri said he was guilty in court in San Jose. He did something bad with computers, said the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Devagiri, 30, from Newport Beach, California, said he worked with three people in 2020 and 2021 to trick a delivery company in San Francisco, police said.
The police said Devagiri used people's accounts to order things. Then, he used a worker's password to get into DoorDash. He changed the orders to go to drivers he knew. These drivers said they gave the orders to people, but they did not. Devagiri changed the computer system to pay these drivers for orders they did not deliver.
Devagiri used a computer program to change orders. He changed them from "delivered" to "not delivered." Then, he gave the orders to drivers he knew, said the police.
The person who did the bad thing said they were sorry in court. It happened in 2023.
Devagiri is the third person found guilty in this plan. He may go to jail for 20 years and pay $250,000. He will be back in court on Sept. 16.
