Amazon says it has made a new robot for its warehouses, called Vulcan, that can 'feel' some things it touches.
The Vulcan robot has two arms and can move things inside Amazon's storage areas in its warehouses. It uses sensors to feel when it touches something. One arm moves items around in a section, and the other arm, which has a camera and a suction cup, picks up items.
Amazon says Vulcan was trained using real-world information, such as details about force and touch, to select about 75% of Amazon's products. They also say it can improve by itself over time. The robot is now used in Spokane, Washington, and Hamburg, Germany, and it has already handled 500,000 orders there.
Vulcan is the newest warehouse robot used by Amazon, which has hundreds of thousands of robots to help with customer orders worldwide. Some people believe Amazon uses robots like Vulcan to replace human workers, but Amazon says the robots simply make their warehouses safer.
