Google's app for iPhones is adding a new "Simplify" tool that uses AI to make difficult text on the internet easier to read, without needing to leave the page.
Simplify uses a method from Google Research to improve writing prompts and make difficult text easier to understand with Gemini, while keeping the main information. Google's tests showed that the simpler text helped people understand and remember the original details better.
Google likely hopes that by offering a feature like Simplify, people will keep using Google's tools and services to understand difficult topics, instead of using popular tools from other companies like OpenAI's ChatGPT.
You can use Simplify by choosing text on a website you are visiting in the Google app and then tapping the 'Simplify' button. You will then see an easier version of the text to help you understand the information and continue reading.
Google's research blog shows an example of how this feature might work.
This serious lung problem damages the lungs in two ways: emphysema, which harms the air sacs, and fibrosis, which causes scarring. Cells in the lungs change, and the body makes more substances that control the immune system. The blood vessels in the lungs also change a lot.
Google explains that this feature is designed to help people understand difficult subjects they find when learning new things online.
Google said in a blog post, "Our goal is for our models to explain difficult ideas correctly, without adding mistakes or leaving out important details." They added, "The rewritten text should help people understand hard topics while keeping the original meaning."
Simplify is becoming available for people using iPhones this week.
