On Tuesday, Google announced a new version of their main AI model, Gemini 2.5 Pro, called Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition). Google says this new version is better than many common tests.
You can use the Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) with the Gemini API and on Google's Vertex AI and AI Studio. It costs the same as the old Gemini 2.5 Pro. You can also find it in Google's Gemini chatbot on the web and on your phone.
Google is releasing a new model before its yearly I/O conference. At this conference, Google will show many new AI models and tools. The company is trying hard to be a leader in the very competitive AI market. Other companies like OpenAI and xAI are also releasing powerful new models soon.
Google says Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) is much better at coding and making websites you can interact with. They also say the model is better at changing code to do a specific task and at fixing code.
In a blog post, Google says that Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) is the best on the WebDev Arena Leaderboard. This is a test that shows how well a model can create good-looking and useful web apps. Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) is also very good at understanding videos. It scored 84.8% on VideoMME, a popular test for this.
Google wrote in a blog post that if you already use Gemini 2.5 Pro, this new version will help you code better. It will also fix important problems developers have talked about, like making fewer mistakes when using functions and improving how often function calling works. Google also said the model naturally likes good-looking web design, but you can still control it.
