According to financial documents seen by The Information, OpenAI expects to pay a smaller percentage of its revenue to its investor and partner, Microsoft, by 2030 compared to what it pays now.
This news comes after OpenAI changed its plan this week. Instead of a big restructuring, they will now follow a new plan. This new plan means their part that makes money will become a public benefit company, but it will still be controlled by their part that does not make money.
According to The Information, OpenAI currently gives 20% of its total income to Microsoft. However, the company told investors that it plans to give only 10% of its income to its business partners, including Microsoft, by the end of 2030.
Microsoft has invested a lot of money in OpenAI. They have an agreement until 2030 where they share the money they earn. This agreement also lets Microsoft use OpenAI's technology in its AI products and be the only one to use OpenAI's services on its Azure platform.
Bloomberg reported on Monday that Microsoft hasn't approved OpenAI's suggested company structure yet. Microsoft, a bigger tech company, reportedly wants to be sure the new structure will protect the money it has invested, which is billions of dollars.
OpenAI and Microsoft did not quickly reply when asked for their opinions.
