Google’s app for iPhones will soon have a new feature called "Simplify." This feature uses artificial intelligence to make difficult or specialized text on the internet easier to understand, and you don't have to leave the webpage.
Simplify uses a method from Google Research to improve instructions and Gemini to make complex text easier to understand, keeping the main points. Google's tests showed that the simpler text helped users understand and remember the original information better.
Google probably hopes people will use its own tools and services, like the Simplify feature, to understand hard topics. They want people to do this instead of using other popular tools like ChatGPT from OpenAI.
To use Simplify, choose any text on a webpage in the Google app and tap the "Simplify" button. You will then see a simpler text version to help you understand the information and continue reading.
For example, Google's research blog shows what this feature could look like. It gives an example of a difficult text you might find: 'This illness is complicated. It damages the lungs in many ways, including harming lung tissue, causing scarring, changing the types of immune cells, increasing substances that affect the immune system, and changing the blood vessels in the lungs.'
This difficult lung condition damages the lungs in two ways: emphysema, which harms the air sacs, and fibrosis, which causes scarring. The immune cells in the lungs also change and make more substances that control the immune system. The blood vessels in the lungs also change a lot.
Google states that this feature aims to help people understand difficult subjects they find when learning online.
Google said in a blog post, "Our models must rephrase difficult ideas correctly, without making mistakes or leaving out important details." They also said, "The new text should help people understand hard information while keeping the main meaning of the first text."
Simplify is becoming available for people using iOS this week.
