TikTok is improving its search so you can now see reviews for some places in the comments section of a video. This new test feature means you don't have to search again or use Google if you want to find out more about a place you see on TikTok.
If you can use this new feature on TikTok, you will find a "Reviews" tab on the right when you open the comments for a video.
For example, if you find a video of Central Park in New York City where the person who made it has added the location, you can see how other users have rated the place, read their reviews, and look at any photos they have uploaded.
You can also click on a reviewer's name to go to their TikTok profile from here. This is different from an older Google Maps link, which had a Google Maps icon.
While the new feature could be useful for some people, others might feel it makes the user experience too complex when they are looking at content.
This action is the newest attempt by TikTok to grow its search capabilities and compete with Google.
In 2022, a Google executive said that TikTok was taking business away from its main services, Search and Maps, especially with young people. Now, TikTok has become a serious competitor to Google in many ways.
Besides being a great place for young people (Gen Z) to search for locations, TikTok also added image search last year. This feature lets users take or upload a picture to find similar items to buy on TikTok Shop.
In September 2024, TikTok started letting advertisers place ads on its search results page with "TikTok Search Ads Campaigns." This is a search tool that uses keywords to show brands' ads when people search for things.
It's not clear if TikTok will offer this review feature to everyone. The company didn't want to comment before this article was published. But when TechCrunch tested it, the feature only showed up on some videos that had a location tagged.
