It looks like there is a problem between two tech companies, Figma and Lovable. Figma sent a letter to Lovable, a new company that uses AI, and told them to stop doing something.
The letter says Lovable should stop using the name "Dev Mode" for a new product. Figma has a product with the same name and officially registered it last year.
It's interesting that 'dev mode' is a common name in many products for people who write computer programs. It's like an edit mode. Big companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft have features called 'developer mode' in their products like iOS, Chrome, and Xbox. People often call this 'dev mode' when they talk about the products.
Many people use "dev mode". For example, Atlassian used it in their products before Figma had its copyright. It is also a common name for a feature in many free software projects.
Figma told TechCrunch that their brand name is for the short name "Dev Mode," not the longer name "developer mode." This is a little like having a brand name for the word "bug" when you mean "debugging."
Figma has to send letters to people who use their name without asking. If they don't protect their name, it might become a normal word, and they won't be able to stop others from using it.
Some people online say this word is very common and should not be a trademark. They think Lovable should try to change it.
Anton Osika, the boss of Lovable, told TechCrunch that his company will not change the name of the feature. Figma asked them to change it, but they said no.
We will see if Figma takes legal action. Figma is also busy with other things. On Tuesday, Figma said it is planning to sell shares to people. But if Figma takes legal action, a fight in different countries could cost a lot for the new Swedish company, Lovable. Lovable got $15 million in February to start their business.
Also, it's interesting that Lovable is becoming popular in something called "vibe coding." This is when people write what they want, and the product creates it for them, including the computer code. They added a special feature called "dev mode" a few weeks ago so people can change the code.
Lovable says it is like Figma. On its website, it says designers can use Lovable easily, without difficult work like in programs such as Figma. And many new companies are doing this.
So this is not just a fight about a name. A bigger company is getting ready to fight a small, new company that is causing problems. About a year ago, Figma was worth $12.5 billion.
Someone from Figma seems to agree. They told TechCrunch that Figma has not sent letters to other tech companies, like Microsoft, about using the word because their products are different.
Osika from Lovable is ready to disagree. He told TechCrunch that Figma should make their product good and not just market their name. He also said that Lovable is getting customers from Figma and other design tools made before new AI like LLMs.
Dylan Field, who started Figma, talked to Garry Tan and said he didn't think products using 'vibe coding' were a big problem.
Field said people like vibe coding because it is fast. But he said it is important to help people start quickly and also finish their work. This is a problem for design and code.
Osika also looks ready to compete. He put Figma's letter on X and used the smiling face.
