Japan has named Onosato as its new sumo grand champion, or yokozuna. He is the first Japanese wrestler to reach this high rank since 2017, as Mongolian competitors have mostly dominated the sport recently. Onosato, whose real name is Daiki Nakamura, is 24 years old and weighs 191 kilograms. He was promoted to sumo's top rank by the Japan Sumo Association after winning the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. The new champion comes from Ishikawa prefecture, an area that was severely damaged by a deadly earthquake and tsunami in 2024. Onosato has promised to use his new position to inspire and support the people in his home region. His promotion creates a rivalry with Hoshoryu, who was born in Mongolia and is the other current yokozuna. Their next tournament is scheduled for July in Nagoya.
