Non-French athletes at the French Open tennis tournament have complained about the very strong and unfriendly atmosphere when they play against French opponents. They said it was like a very intense football game. Because of the crowd's aggressive behavior, which included booing, whistling, and shouting insults, the tournament organizers stopped selling alcohol in the stands last year. Some athletes, like Nicolás Jarry from Chile, have said their experiences were "disgusting" and the worst they have ever had. The tournament director, Amélie Mauresmo, said that security has been increased and chair umpires can now do more to stop and report bad behavior from the crowd. However, not all athletes are bothered by this unfriendly atmosphere. Belgian player Elise Mertens said it is a normal part of tennis. French player Corentin Moutet understood the pressure of playing at home and told players to ignore it.
