Non-French athletes competing at the French Open have lamented the palpable atmosphere of animosity prevalent during matches against their French counterparts, drawing parallels to the ferocity and partisan intensity typically associated with high-stakes football derbies.

The egregious displays of belligerence from spectators, encompassing a cacophony of invective, derisive whistles, and vituperative pronouncements, precipitated the tournament organizers' interdiction of alcohol from the stands in the preceding year.

Several athletes, Chilean Nicolás Jarry amongst them, have characterized their experiences as "horrendous," even going so far as to deem them the nadir of their lives.

In response to the egregious conduct exhibited by spectators, Tournament Director Amélie Mauresmo articulated that enhanced security measures were being implemented, and furthermore, that chair umpires had been granted expanded latitude to intervene and report instances of unacceptable behaviour with due alacrity.

Notwithstanding the pervasive antipathy, not all athletes found themselves perturbed; Belgian player Elise Mertens, for instance, posited that such animosity was merely an intrinsic facet of the tennis milieu.
