Lawyers for the NCAA deal suggested a big change for team sizes on Wednesday. They said that players who lost their places could play without counting against the new team limits, as long as they can still play.
The lawyers told the court that schools should make lists of all the students they did not let play.
These students, called "Designated Student-Athletes" in the new paper, can be asked to come back and try to join the team again, but it is not certain. They can also choose to go to other schools.
So, these players will not be part of the new team rules that were shown last year and accepted by Judge Claudia Wilken.
Also, the plan would help high school players who were promised a place but lost it. They would get this help for as long as they can play in college.
Wilken has agreed to the main parts of the deal. This means each school can give athletes up to $20.5 million every year. Also, players who did not get money for using their name, picture, and story will get more than $2.7 billion.
The newest idea came after two weeks of hard work. This happened because the judge told the lawyers for both sides to talk again. He said that the number of players allowed in the plan was not okay.
The plan wants to change the rules for sports teams. Now, there is a limit on how many players can get money to play (like 85 for football). The new idea is to limit how many players can be on the team (like 105 for football). Schools can give money to all players, but that will cost a lot, so many people think some players will not get money.
Wilken felt sorry for the many players who lost their places on teams when schools started to follow the rules of the agreement. About twelve players shared their stories at a meeting on April 7.
Wilken asked the lawyers to change that part of the deal. The NCAA said no at first. They said changing things that were already decided would cause more problems. But Wilken said they must change it. He said if they didn't, the whole plan could fail.
The lawyers for the people who started the case said they did even better than Wilken. They let schools take back players they had cut, and this did not count against their player limit. They also made this rule work for new schools.
The plaintiffs said in court that they think the changes to the agreement are more than the court asked for.
The lawyers said it is not sure that the athletes will get their places on the team back.
They wrote that the schools said the new agreement lets them choose their players, which they could always do. This does not change the rules about how many players can be on a team. The new agreement makes sure that players who might lose their place because of these new rules will be in the same good situation as if the rules were never made. This means the rules about team size do not apply to them.
The judge will probably let people who don't like the plan say why they disagree one more time before she decides.
Time is running out for the NCAA and the schools that are part of it. They have many athletes.
