Lawyers in the big NCAA case suggested a new idea about how many players teams can have. They said players who lost their place on a team could still play and not count towards the new number, as long as they are still allowed to play.
Lawyers suggested that schools make lists of the players they did not choose. This number could be very big.
These students, called "Designated Student-Athletes" in the new paper, can try again to be on the team, but it is not certain they will get a place, or they can go to other schools.
Those athletes will not be counted in the new team rules. These rules were shown last year and accepted by Judge Claudia Wilken in October.
This plan would also help students who were promised a place at college after high school, but then lost it. They could use this help for as long as they can play sports at college.
Wilken has agreed to the main parts of the deal. This deal lets each school give up to $20.5 million each year to their athletes. Also, over $2.7 billion will be paid to players who say the NCAA and five big groups unfairly stopped them from making money from their name, picture, and story.
The new plan was made after two weeks of hard work. A judge told the lawyers for both sides to talk again. He said the part about how many players a team can have was not okay.
The plan wants to change the rules for sports teams. Now, there is a limit on how many players can get money for school, like 85 players for football. The new plan will limit the total number of players on a team, like 105 players for football. Schools can give money to all players, but that will cost a lot. People think that some players who don't get money or only get a little money will not be on the team.
Wilken felt bad for the many players who lost their places on teams when schools started getting ready for the agreement. About twelve of them shared their stories at a meeting on April 7.
Wilken asked the lawyers to change that part of the deal. The NCAA said no at first. They said changing things now would make more problems because it was already hard. Wilken said they had to change it, or the whole plan might fail.
The lawyers for the players said they did something even better. They allowed schools to bring back players they had cut, and this did not count against their limit. They also made this possible for new schools.
The people who sued think the changes to the agreement are more than the court wanted, according to their court paper.
The lawyers said it's not sure the athletes will get their places on the team back.
They said schools can still choose their players, and this was always true. The new rules mean that players who lost their place because of the limits will be treated as if there were no limits. This means the limits do not affect them.
The judge will likely give people who are against the plan a short time to write down their new reasons before she makes her final decision. Steve Berman, one of the main lawyers for the people who started the case, said this week that the people who don't like the plan will not be happy with the new idea.
Time is running out for the NCAA and its many schools with many athletes. The new rules should start in July, and football practice starts soon after.
