On Monday morning, team owner John Fisher spoke to a big group of people with dirt and building machines behind him. He also showed where home plate will be at the new Athletics ballpark. He said, "We are Vegas' team."
Many people watched the team start building their new stadium. Important people like Rob Manfred from MLB, government leaders, and famous old players were there. Young baseball players also watched. The new stadium will cost a lot of money and can hold many people. It should be ready for the 2028 season.
Nevada and Clark County have said they will give up to $380 million of public money for the project.
Team president Marc Badain said, "I'm sure this will be finished in 2028. The workers are here and ready to start."
It's good to see that today proves we are doing well. The next three years will be good for our town, the building work, jobs, and all the new things that will happen as the building starts to be built soon.
Badain did a similar job when he worked for the Raiders football team. He helped the team move from Oakland to Las Vegas in 2020. He also helped get approval and build the $2 billion Allegiant Stadium.
Before their new stadium was ready, the Raiders stayed in Oakland for three years and played in the same stadium as the A's. The Raiders still felt connected to the Bay Area. However, A's fans were very angry because their team was leaving.
The team could not stay in Oakland, so they played their last season in the old stadium last year. They are now playing about an hour away in West Sacramento for at least three years, while they wait to move to Las Vegas.
"Fisher said, "We are a local team. We want young fans first, because if we get the kids, we get their parents too. It doesn't take too long, but it takes time to become a winning team."
We want to keep improving what we have now. Building a team is like building anything. It can take a long time. It's like building a stadium. We believe we have what we need to be successful.
Bally's owns a big piece of land (35 acres) at the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. They will build a stadium on nine acres of that land. In October, the Tropicana's buildings were taken down at night to make space for the stadium.
The A's want to play well in their temporary home, and they also want to get ready for their future home. Each A's player has a picture of Sacramento's Tower Bridge on one sleeve and a Las Vegas logo on the other. This is because of a three-year agreement with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
In December, the Las Vegas Stadium Authority agreed to important documents. This was a big step for the A's to become Las Vegas' team.
The stadium looks like the Sydney Opera House. It has five parts that are on top of each other. A big glass window behind the playing field lets you see the Las Vegas Strip, so it feels like you are outside. The air conditioning will come from the seats, not from one big system.
This will be the smallest stadium in MLB. The Tampa Bay Rays usually play at Tropicana Field. It can hold 25,000 people when some parts are closed. But it has almost 40,000 seats when it is fully open.
The Rays are playing in a small stadium this year because a hurricane damaged their main stadium. We don't know where they will play next, and new people might buy the team soon.
Cleveland plays at Progressive Field, which has about 34,830 seats now. It used to have more, around 43,345, when it opened in 1994.
The A's will be the fourth big sports team in Las Vegas. They will join the Raiders, the Golden Knights (NHL), and the Aces (WNBA).
Manfred said, "I think this is a good place for us. Many people live here, other sports have done well, and there are many tourists. I am sure this team will do very well in Las Vegas."
