Paris Saint-Germain demonstrated exceptional resilience and tactical acumen on Wednesday, successfully repelling a barrage of Arsenal's assaults to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory. This triumph propels them into the Champions League final, offering another opportunity to claim the coveted title.
Unaccustomed to being without their typical ball control, PSG appeared uncertain initially, yet discovered solutions through counter-attacks and the crucial saves of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, securing a 3-1 aggregate progression.
PSG got to the final of Europe's main tournament for only the second time ever. They were second five years before. They did this in the first season after their star player, Kylian Mbappé, left to go to Real Madrid.
The void left by Mbappé was not adequately addressed by the acquisition of another superstar. This represented a significant shift for a club where, for over a decade, the owners had consistently invested heavily to recruit prominent figures like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Lionel Messi, and Neymar.
The club's new strategy helped coach Luis Enrique create a strong team that played some of the best football in Europe.
Enrique said, "From the start, I said our goal was to work hard enough to be in a position to make history, and that is still our goal." He added, "We want to be the first to win the trophy we've waited a long time for. This project has changed since last year, and I feel very good here as a coach because the president gives me the freedom and support to build what we want. We are adjusting to the market to create a team that gets better every day."
The French club will contend once more for its inaugural Champions League title when it takes on Inter Milan in Munich on May 31.
"We have unwavering faith in our coach and our players—our gifted, youthful, and ambitious athletes," Nasser al-Khelaifi, PSG president, conveyed to CBS Sports. "They demonstrate unwavering dedication to the team, embodying the club's spirit and fighting for the city. That is paramount."
With one fixture yet to be contested, our task is far from complete.
Three-time European champions Inter overcame Barcelona with an aggregate score of 7-6 in a semifinal widely considered among the most memorable in the competition's history.
Having overcome Aston Villa and Liverpool before defeating Arsenal, PSG, who were knocked out by Borussia Dortmund at the semi-final stage last year, were defeated by Bayern Munich in the 2020 final.
Paris Saint-Germain ended the stalemate in the twenty-seventh minute following a set play, after the Arsenal backline headed a free kick out towards the eighteen-yard box. The ball rebounded into the trajectory of Fabian Ruiz, who struck a magnificent half-volley into the goal.
Achraf Hakimi executed a precise curled shot in the 72nd minute, extending the lead to 2-0 before Bukayo Saka reduced the deficit for Arsenal.
Arsenal had encountered difficulties early on last week in London, finding it challenging to contend with PSG's midfield intensity, which resulted in a 1-0 defeat.
This time, with midfielder Thomas Partey back in the line-up, the Gunners launched 61 attacks, in contrast to PSG's 26.
The visitors’ ascendancy was swiftly rewarded when Declan Rice rose high but headed wide, and Gabriel Martinelli saw his strike parried by Donnarumma.
Arsenal exploited the flanks to great effect against PSG, and came close once more in the eighth minute when Martin Ødegaard unleashed a powerful low drive from outside the area, obliging Donnarumma to make another impressive save.
PSG were primarily relegated to seeking opportunities on the counterattack, which proved infrequent.
A scoring opportunity eventually arose in the seventeenth minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, finding room on the left, cut inside onto his right foot and unleashed a characteristically precise shot that struck the post.
PSG subsequently failed to exploit a misdirected pass from William Saliba, yet Désiré Doué could merely direct a tame effort directly towards Raya.
Shortly after the sixty-minute mark, Arsenal fashioned another significant chance as Saka expertly curved a shot towards the top corner, only for Donnarumma to fully extend himself and deflect the ball.
Subsequently, Vitinha failed to convert a penalty awarded after a VAR review determined Myles Lewis-Skelly had committed a handball. Nonetheless, PSG soon extended their advantage when Hakimi expertly struck the ball into the corner following a pass from substitute Ousmane Dembélé.
Arsenal maintained their attacking pressure throughout, narrowing the deficit courtesy of Saka in the 76th minute.
