Lawyers for the NCAA deal suggested a big change on Wednesday. They want to let players who lost their spots keep playing. These players would not count towards the new team size limits as long as they can still play.
The lawyers told the schools to make lists of all the players they did not choose. They thought a deal would be made soon. There could be many players on these lists, maybe hundreds or even more.
These students, called 'Designated Student-Athletes' in the new paper, can be asked to come back and try to join a team. But they are not sure to get a place. Or they can decide to go to different schools.
Those athletes will not be part of the new team size rules. These rules were announced last fall and first approved by Judge Claudia Wilken in October.
The plan would also help students who were promised a place at university but then lost it. They would get this help for as long as they can play sports at university.
Wilken has agreed to the main parts of the deal. This deal lets each school give up to $20.5 million every year to their athletes. It also gives more than $2.7 billion to players. These players said the NCAA and five big groups unfairly stopped them from making money using their name, picture, and fame.
The newest idea came after two weeks of hard work. This happened because Wilken told the lawyers to talk again. He said the part about how many players a team could have in the plan was not okay.
The plan wants to change the rules about how many players can be on a team and get money for school.
Wilken felt sorry for the many players who lost their places on teams when schools got ready for the agreement. About twelve players shared their stories during a meeting on April 7.
Wilken asked the lawyers to change that part of the agreement. The NCAA said no at first. They said changing things that were already happening would make a messy situation even worse. Wilken told them to do it anyway, or the whole plan would be in danger.
The students' lawyers said they improved Wilken's idea. Schools could bring back players they had cut, and this would not count against their team limit. Also, new schools could use this rule.
"We think these changes to the agreement are more than the court asked for," they wrote in court.
The lawyers said it is not sure that the athletes will get their places on the team back.
The people being sued said schools can still pick their players, which was always true. The new deal makes sure players who lost their spot because of the new team size rules will be okay, like the rules didn't happen.
The judge will probably give people who don't like the plan a short time to tell her why before she decides. Steve Berman, a main lawyer for the people who sued, said this week that those who are against the plan won't be happy with the new idea.
Time is running out for the NCAA and its many schools. These schools have many athletes. The agreement should start on July 1st, and football practice begins soon after that.
